Core Beliefs
The Apostle's Creed, comprised roughly 300 years after the birth of Christ, has stood as a summary of Christian theology for centuries. Thus, it serves as a strong foundation for what we believe at EBC.
God
We believe in the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, that is, we believe God is manifested to humanity in three Persons: 1) in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and 2) in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, [and] 3) in the Holy Spirit.
Revelation
We believe God's truth is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and, in the words of 2 Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
Humanity
We believe that God created humanity, "in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them' (Genesis 1:27).
The Fall
Although humanity was created in the image of God, due to our innate selfishness, all people "have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). In the words of the prophet Isaiah, "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way" (Isaiah 53:6).
Salvation
We believe that, "God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). We believe that, "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved" (Romans 10:13), "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).
The Church
We believe the Church is set apart from the world by the sanctifying power of the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit. There is one universal church. That is the meaning of the term "catholic" found in the Apostle's Creed. Although there are many Christian denominations, there is one true Church comprised of those who are saved in Christ. This salvation gives the Church a unique bond referred to as the "communion of saints."
Resurrection
We believe in "the resurrection of the body and life everlasting." The resurrection is the great hope of the Church. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live" (John 11:25). As the Apostle Paul said to the Corinthian church; "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive" (1 Corinthians 15:22), for "the last enemy that will be destroyed is death" (1 Corinthians 15:26).
The Apostle's Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.
